Arrival is a hybrid virtual reality (VR) project prototyped in 2017 and co-produced by Jacqueline Olive, Elle-Maija Tailfeathers, Danis Goulet, and Lisa Jackson. Using green screen production, 360 degree video, and computer-generated imagery (CGI), users embody the anonymous character of a young man on a mysterious bus ride. As they travel from the roads of Toronto via his CGI body, VR users interact with strangers onboard and learn the man is headed to visit his mother.

This virtual-world journey through Ontario and inside the man’s emotional world, slowly reveals answers to the question of where they will end up as he reaches to pull the chain that signals his usual stop and everyone disembarks, landing them on the grounds of the Brockville Jail.
